Inside the monumental complex you can visit the Tonnara’s museum. Sicilian history is characterized by the mattanza, the ancient ritual of tuna fishing. In fact, tuna have been choosing for centuries the Sicilian coast for their reproductive cycle.
Scopello is one of the stages of the tuna’s journey when swimming rapidly to go lay its eggs. For this reason, the Tonnara di Scopello is called di corsa (related to running) along with Milazzo, Tindari and Favignana. Fishing was carried out through a complex system of nets forming a trap of
several chambers, placed as a barrier along the tuna’s path. The ritual of tuna fishing is rich in stories and fascinating traditions.
Today, visiting the monumental complex of the Tonnara di Scopello, you can observe the fishing tools, the warehouses that lodge the original boats and the buildings where the tuna was processed after the mattanza.
A new museum itinerary is being set up to offer visitors more details about the ancient tradition of
mattanza and the history of the fishermen from Tonnara di Scopello.
